Thank you for participating in the 14th Annual “Don’t Worry Be Happy” event benefiting Mental Health Association of South MS. This year is Mardi Gras themed, so come out in your fun outfit!

2021 Annette O’Keefe Humanitarian Award Recipient: LuAnn Pappas, CEO of Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort

Through your generosity we are able to continue services benefiting people with mental illness and others who want to incorporate prevention measures into their lives.  Please take a look at the rest of our website for services. In years past, funds raised helped grow our services. This year most of the money is for services, however, our building is in need of repair; roof, paint and flooring. Please help us reach our goal of $75,000 to make Mental Health Association of South MS safe for the people we serve.

Silent auction item bidding will be open on Event.Gives starting Friday, July 9th at 1:00pm. Anyone will be able to bid from the app by phone or computer. Auto notifications keep you informed of your bids. More information to come.

2021 Annette O’Keefe Humanitarian Award Recipient: LuAnn Pappas, CEO of Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort

LuAnn Pappas

With over 35 years of experience in the gaming industry, LuAnn Pappas is one of only two female casino Chief Executive Officers on the thriving Mississippi Gulf Coast. As CEO of Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort, she s oversees a prized vacation and gaming destination. LuAnn attributes much of her success as a leader to the influence and advice of her father, who emphasized fairness, firmness, discipline, and a never-quit attitude.

Landon & April Burks

This coastal couple has been married since 2017 and have a handsome baby boy together.  April has been in business for 15 years with boutiques:  Eve Marie’s Boutique in Hattiesburg, Love Ivy and Franko’s Clothing Co. in Ocean Springs. Landon is the Business Development Manager for Sterling Petroleum.  He is an avid golfer Their favorite activities include traveling and of course spending time with their 10 month old son.  Some of the attributes that connected them to the Mental Health Association of South MS – they are caring, giving and hopeful. 

Jocelyn Gavin-Lane

Jocelyn is the founder of the Gulfport based Premier Professional Counseling Services, LLC and founder of the nonprofit organization Pink Lotus Project. She has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Social Work from Jackson State University. She holds a Master of Public Health (concentration in Health Policy and Administration) from the University of Southern Mississippi. She is an alumna of both the VA Leadership Development Institute and Leadership Gulf Coast – Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce. Jocelyn is also a public speaker as well as a published author.

Jeff & Linsey O’Keefe

Jeff and Linsey live in Biloxi. Jeff is President of Bradford O’Keefe Funeral Home, a multi-generational family business that began in 1865. Linsey is set to open Layla’s Coffeehouse & Eatery, formerly Nezaty’s. Layla’s is named after their daughter. The couple loves spending time with family and staying active at the gym. Jeff can be found playing golf while Linsey likes to relax at home in her downtime.

Leonard & Angela Papania

Leonard and Angela were married in 1990. They have four children, James (Emily), Nicholas (Alex), Bennett and Rosemary.  They have two grandchildren Elena and Evelyn (James and Emily). Angela is employed with the Gulfport School District at Bayou View Elementary as a teaching assistant. Leonard is with Oceans Healthcare based in Texas working as the Law Enforcement and Community Outreach Liaison.  He had a career with the Gulfport Police Department (1991 – 2020) and was Chief of Police since 2013.  During his tenure he advocated for improvements in the local mental health system. 

Dr. Shelia Rivers

Dr. Shelia Rivers is a trauma expert for women. She has been a mental health professional for 14 years. Dr. Rivers wears numerous professional hats: CEO and Chief Therapist of Rivers Psychotherapy Services, published author, Adjunct Professor at Tulane University, Public Speaker, Expert Mental Health Consultant, Social Work Intern Supervisor, and Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Her academic preparation includes Doctor of Social Work from Tulane University, a Master of Public Health with Healthcare Executive Management emphasizes, Master of Social Work, and Bachelor of Psychology. 

Taylor

Preston & Ellen Taylor

Preston is Owner of Gulf States Construction and has a background in residential building for people with disabilities.  Ellen is an Insurance Agent with United Risk Agency, Inc. Ellen expresses her awareness of the importance of mental health and hopes that participating in this event encourages people to become more open to discussion of mental illness.  This friendly, kind, hard working couple loves playing tennis and cooking.  They also enjoy coaching T-ball and keeping up with their 3 and 4 year old boys. 

Ann Marie Walley

Ann Marie Walley is owner, stylist and makeup artist of Antonian Salon.  Ann Marie is the second-generation business owner of Antonian Salon. Growing up in the salon, Ann Marie has been exposed to the beauty industry at an early age.On the days that she is not running the salon, she enjoys spending time with her family and being at the baseball field.  She is the proud mother of two children and loves spending her days off with the people close to her. She also loves being active within her community and St. James Catholic Family.
